She is active in various non-governmental organizations. in English Literature and Sociology from Mills College in California. She holds a doctorate degree in English Literature and Cultural Anthropology from Wayne State University in Michigan and a B.A. In 2013, she was awarded the King Abdulaziz Medal of the First Degree for her international service. Obaid is one of the first 30 Saudi women who were appointed by King Abdallah bin Abdulaziz in 2013 as members of the Shura Council (Consultative Council) where she served for four years. From 2001 to 2010, she assumed the Under-Secretary-General position as the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). She started her career at the United Nations in 1975 in the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) where she served at different positions, including the Director, Division for Population and Social Development until 1993, when she became the Deputy Executive Secretary. Thoraya Obaid was the first Arab woman to head a UN agency.
